WD Water Crowns 005

I recently tried my hand at water drop photography. The WD in the titles, of course, stand for Water Drops followed by my impression of the abstract shapes I got.

The first few were my first attempts and only a few came out worth mentioning. It's surprisingly hard to get them right. Also, the first ones were shot with clear water in a stainless steel sink using on board flash. This gave them a nice "liquid metal" look and resulted in some interesting shapes, but I wasn't completely satisfied with the results.

Later, I added a stained broiler pan in the water and a drop or two of oil to get the multi-colored rainbow effect that you see on roadways after a rain. The pan's stains and colored flecks gave some texture and the oil gave the ripples some interesting color variations. Still, I wasn't quite satisfied.

For this third attempt, I came up with a much more pleasing effect by simply pouring a bottle of Pepsi Cola into the water and shooting before it had a chance to thoroughly mix with the water, resulting in some really nice shades and hues of browns in the water. I also got the focus and flash much better tuned, as you'll see in this series of images.
