Dedicated to (Nanda) in honor of a 'missed opportunity' she still speaks of with regret. I hope this helps somehow and doesn't just enhance your regret.
Not one of my technically better captures, but I thought she might enjoy this regardless.
I made a trip to a small local lake. Not sure of it's name...I just call it 'Dirty Lake' as it's a lake that at one time, had become so polluted that it was actually deemed toxic. Efforts have been made to clean it up and it must be working at least to some degree as I have photographed Osprey eating fish from the lake and a River Otter swimming in it as well as many other types of wildlife living in or around it. This particular day, I was bushwhacking a trail through the dense undergrowth surrounding the lake, following a little stream that parallels the lake when I came across this little family of raccoons. It appeared that Mom was giving her two little ones a lesson in hunting for food or maybe just showing them one of her favorite pools. As soon as I poked my head through the brush to get some shots, she focused right on me. I guess a Mother's natural instincts to protect her young was strong in her. Managed to get this one shot before she herded them back into the undergrowth. Still, for me, that one short moment was a thrilling experience as it always is for me when I come face to face with any truly wild wildlife that many can't experience the way a photographer does. It's like I've been privy to a glimpse into a mysterious world that few get invitations to.

You know, Mark, each and every evening and night, there is a family of raccoons who come on the veranda to eat the bird seeds. The parents and 3 children, a little bigger now than the ones on your photo. They are making such a noise! lol But I read what you wrote in a reply, they are not aggressive at all with me, the children would come easily towards me but the parents don't let them to do it. Unfortunately, as it is dark outside and they are running away when I show up, I can't take good pics of them. End of the story! 'sss
And a great story it was too, Jo! Yeh, I guess I DO get lucky once in a while....at least, that's how I feel when I get a chance to take shots like this one.
I know you don't think they're agressive and with you being Dr. Doolittle and all that's probably true but I hope you're being careful. They can be unpredictable.
You may not have gotten any photos of them yet, but I know you will one day....you're a whiz at getting great shots of all your animal friends.
Yes, I DO know how much you love wildlife and it's evident in all of your photos. And yes, I do as well and if it's obvious to you, then I am succeeding in capturing them the way I hoped for.
