An Oregon Junco perches on the toprail of the chainlink fence right next to where I'm shooting photos of Yazhi and Kenai, the Oregon Zoo's Gray Wolves, as if to see what I'm up too. Or maybe he wants to share his bird's eye view with me.
Thanks to Reixed and JocelynR for helping me find out it's true name. Reixed thought it was a Dark Eyed Junco and said it might be the Oregon subspecies. I'm not sure if it's Oregon subspecies and the Oregon Junco are one in the same, but given names to research, I have found that it is in fact, an Oregon Junco. In either case, it is a very pretty little guy for not being very flashy.

True, very true. I was using the telephoto for the wolves when he landed next to me so I just swung around and shot him. It was a really dreary, gray, rainy day that day...not much light and I refuse to bump up my ISO if I don't absolutely have to. I had the camera braced on the railing around the viewing area or really, it wouldn't have come out as good as it did.
Thank you again, Rose. This is one thing I like about the zoo. Yeh, there are some great animals to shoot, but if you pay attention, the zoo offers much more than just caged animals.
I get at Bluejays too. We have another bird out here that is sometimes called a Mtn. Jay or "camprobber". A friend introduced them to me some time back. They aren't pretty...really. Sort of like a Blue Jay in black and white, but they are sooo cool! If you hold out your hand to them with bread crumbs, they will fly down and land on your upturned fingertips to eat the bread like they have no fear of you at all. I've even put crumbs on the top of my had and had them land on my head. For me, this is the first time I've ever gotten a wild bird to land on my hand. Now, Ruth, or her daughter (not sure which) has a photo of a hummingbird landing on their hand and that just blows me away!!
prove it!
