Painted Dogs I by LoneWolfPhotography Painted Dogs I by LoneWolfPhotography
These members of the canine family though some may think look similar to Hyenas or Jackals (I did as well) are actually more closely related to wolves. They go by several names, including African Wild Dog, Painted Dog, African Hunting Dog, Cape Hunting dog and Spotted Wolf, but I liked "Painted Dogs" the best so I use it here. They do look very much like someone painted their colorings on. They are pack animals like wolves and the Oregon Zoo's pack consists of 5 members, all of whose colorings are as different as fingerprints.

Nice shot - Are they hyper? I noticed what you said to Nataly up there.

I don't know if it's actually that they're hyper or if it's just that they're an animal that is used to ranging in search of food or that they just don't like being "caged". Fact is though, that they rarely stop roaming all over their enclosure so getting the momentary pose kind of shots is difficult...you have to just sort of catch them on the go.

Thanks again Nataly. :D They're very hard to shoot actually, they mostly never stand still at all. Never seen more nervous movement in an animal before. :(

Brilliant shot and they are very fascinating to watch... you were asking about the ears, here's some info I found from this site: [link]

Large, rounded ears give them excellent hearing and help keep the dogs cool in a hot climate.

They can also signal their pack mates by moving their very large ears to show what direction to go or what to do. African wild dogs do not hunt in the same manner as lions do. Instead, they hunt in a relay form, taking turns running after the prey

Geez! I've missed so many comments that need replying to. Really missed this one. :( Thank you for the compliment and you are right...their constant movement makes them much more interesting to watch than a lot of the other animals.

I found the information you sent me the link to fascinating. I think it's really cool that they hunt in relay form...very intelligent for them to figure that out. Makes them the "pony express" of the predator world. Kind of wonder why other predators haven't figured that out.

I'm the first one to understand, it's getting more and more difficult to stay up to date here because of work pressures!!! ahhh!!! so whether it's today, next week or next month take your time and enjoy :D

Their hunting is interesting and they are exceptionally intelligent but the cat's hunt very differently and it's also fascinating to see, to me the cats are very graceful with soooo much patience :D

I was told something about those ears by one of the keepers, but can't exactly remember what she said. I believe it was that they act like radar dishes and they can turn them very far in either direction to listen to pack mates while they're chasing prey or something like that. I don't think that's exactly it...it was way more interesting than that. I'll have to ask again next time I go.

Splendid photo! :star:

He really seems to be painted in just looking at his forelegs, there are tiger looking stripes on them. And it looks so scary too.
