Ok, so this is a fine example of one of the lessons I had trouble learning in the early years of my photography passion. Used to be I'd let not finding what I wanted to shoot mess up my whole day but I finally got it through my head that even if my intended subjects couldn't be found, there is always that 'silver lining' that pops up when you need it most.
I had been to the main elk viewing area at Jewell Wildlife Refuge and the elk were a no-show. I backtracked to another area of meadows on another road a friend of mine found, but of course, no elk there either.
On my way back to the first area to see if they were out there yet, I drove around a bend in the road and ran smack into one of the best memories in my life. I used to live in Ohio and in Ohio, scenes like this are EVERYWHERE. I'm about to reveal a little known bit of my personal life here.
As a young man, some of my fondest and most heart-warming memories were of having someone special in my life and going for a walk with her, holding hands, laughing and just being goofy...having a great time on roads just like this. Something about the chill in the air, all the Fall color and the crunchy leaves on the ground everywhere that ended up making Autumn my favorite season of the year...at least for the few weeks it lasts.
As I came around the bend in this road, I was transported back to those happier times, the morning sun turning the yellow leaves of the tree into blazing gold, the soft greens of the background trees shining like neon and of course, the two lane blacktop curving out of sight ahead, hiding whatever treasure might be around the bend, fallen leaves blowing across the road and forming an orange carpet on the vibrant green grasses. Ahhh....pure magic! Well, hope you like it too, but in all honesty, it's only a photo and can't really help you feel what I felt standing there in the middle of that country road.
If you like this shot, check this version of it out and I'd love to know what you think of it.

Yes....romantic. I seldom look at the scenes I capture in that way, but it would be very much so to walk there and share it with someone you care about. So glad you liked it Jo!
