Description

On a recent trip to Jewell Wildlife Refuge, I was disappointed to find only a few visible Elk and so I busied myself with finding other subjects to shoot. We arrived at the Refuge fairly early in the morning, maybe an hour after sunrise. It was quite foggy and at this time of the year, morning dew always covers everything. In a small meadow of wild grasses at one of the viewing areas, I found tons of Orb spider webs everywhere I looked and they were all adorned with dew drops and lit beautifully by the low morning sunlight.

I'm not crazy about spiders, but I find them a fascinating subject for close photography and with the combination of morning sun and dazzling dew drops, I quickly got lost in finding the best ones I could.

This one was built in the tops of taller grasses and I almost walked into it before I saw it. Of course, I disturbed him and he zipped across his web to the seed head of whatever kind of tall grass his web was anchored to and he tried to hide under it. I really liked how he looked there with the single tan colored seed head, him hanging upside down and the background of other grasses. Not to mention the fact that he was one of the BIGGEST ones I found...almost SPOOKY BIG! :giggle:

Awww! I love, love, love spiders! And orb weavers are just too adorable. We have a whole bunch out here, all building new webs because we had a rainstorm, lol. I like to sit on the porch and watch them. But it's always so funny when one decides to hide behind something smaller than it! This is also a very pretty color, I love the way it contrasts, very nice lighting.
